sachin magic 200

Sachin Tendulkar claimed the most elusive ODI record of them all when he scored the first ever double century in the game's 38-year-old history, setting up a 153-run win over South Africa, leading to a 2-0 series win. (See pics of Tendulkar's 200)
Tendulkar --- 200 not out, 147 balls, 25 fours and three sixes --- beat Saeed Anwar and Charles Coventry's record of 194 runs, after he had bettered the Indian record of 186 --- set by him in 1999 against New Zealand. (See list of highest individual scores in ODIs)
South Africa, a team he hasn't had the best of records against, bore the brunt of his aggression as India totalled a mammoth 401-3 having elected to bat in the Gwalior ODI. The series win has now ensured that India would remain the No. 2 ODI team in the world at the end of the 2009-10 season.
AB de Villiers struck an 85-ball hundred, an innings, which in any other situation, would have scored his team a win. But South Africa never gathered the desired momentum for the chase. Slumping to 134-7 in the 23rd over, they were bowled out for 248 in the 43rd over.
Dinesh Karthik (79, 85b, 4x4, 3x6) and MS Dhoni (68 not out, 35b, 7x4, 4x6) aided Tendulkar strongly. Karthik added 194 for the second wicket with Tendulkar, before he and Dhoni added 101 from just 54 balls, taking India past 400 off the final ball of the innings.
Tendulkar completed his fifty off 37 balls, and slowed down a little to complete his hundred off 90.
Just after Karthik got out and India claimed the batting Power Play, Tendulkar motored along with Yusuf Pathan (36, 23b, 4x4, 2x6) and reached his 150 in just 28 more balls.
India added 63 runs in the Power Play, putting Tendulkar on course for the double-ton that had deluded the greatest of ODI batsmen.
In the process, Tendulkar also claimed the ODI record for most fours in an innings. He broke Virender Sehwag's Indian record of 21, and then ended the innings with 25 --- one more than the previous record by Sanath Jayasuriya against the Netherlands.
Tendulkar went past Anwar and Coventry in the 46th over with a clip off his toes for a double. But as Dhoni hogged the strike and completed a 29-ball fifty, Tendulkar had to wait till the 50th over --- bowled by Charl Langeveldt --- to complete the double hundred.
Dhoni biffed the first ball for six, and then took a single to bring Tendulkar on strike on 199. The elusive double was finally scored off the third ball which Tendulkar squeezed through point for a single.
No bowler was spared today in the course of Tendulkar's flawless innings. The closest South Africa came to getting his wicket was when he'd already crossed 150 and a close run-out call was referred upstairs.
The feared Dale Steyn conceded 85 in his ten overs. Parnell went for 95 in his full quota. Charl Langeveldt, an ODI specialist, was wicketless for 70 having suffered a nasty cut to his head early on a ball bounced unexpectedly at mid-on and hit him on the head.
South Africa needed a Johannesburg-like special from Herschelle Gibbs to make a contest out of this match. Praveen Kumar shattered his wicket as Gibbs attempted a paddle sweep.
Hashim Amla, back in the side, struck a quick 34 but SA's top order failed against the mounting run rate. JP Duminy made a first-ball duck again on this tour, this time falling LBW to a straighter one from Yusuf.
The series now moves to Ahmedabad for the final ODI on February 27 .

Room to Read in India

When Twitter announced The Fledgling Initiative in October—making and selling wine to benefit an organization called Room to Read, I was thrilled. This past month, my enthusiasm and commitment increased dramatically when I had the chance to visit some of the sites where Room to Read works in India.

Teachers and students in Hardiwar gave me the warmest of welcomes. I was given the opportunity to help children read books in English and one group of students even inited me to sing a song for them. My performance of Itsy Bitsy Spider (see above—pit stains included), sent the kids into fits of laughter.

The schools in these areas face incredible obstacles but the community approaches problems with passion and vigor. One school was having trouble with a dangerous elephant so parents volunteered to take turns walking the kids to school and would even sleep there for a night or two. When I was little there were snow days but nothing like this.

Seeing kids get excited about learning to read made my heart skip a few beats, and made me feel proud to work at a company that chooses to partner with world-changing organizations like Room to Read.
